A Letter from John C. Olson, Director
Career Technical Education Genesee Intermediate School District
January 4, 2002
Dear Zena:
About ten years ago, the Genesee Intermediate School District decided to try the concept of "Win-Win" negotiations with our two bargaining units. You may well remember my reluctance and skepticism as you took us through the many training exercises. I have always had the reputation of "speaking my mind" and I'm sure that I was not your favorite student in your classes.
Our first contract negotiations using the system was painful and frustrating and required hours on hours of time away from our real jobs. We did endure and reached good agreements with both units. We also established Contract Administration and Problem Solving Committees (CAPSC) that meet monthly to work out ongoing problems.
Ten years later, as I prepare to retire, I wanted you to know how effective this process has been for Genesee ISO. The level of trust that we have in the process and in each other has made it possible to grow and change our organization. Last year, we won an
award from the Saturn Corporation for our effective implementation of "Win-Win." Three contracts later, we continue to use the process effectively. As I, along with other charter members leave Genesee ISO, we continue to train the new "kids" in the process.
Simply stated, I cannot imagine approaching labor relations any other way. Thank you for showing us a better way to do our business.
Sincerely,
John C. Olson, Director
Career Technical Education
